BRIEFING FOR UNIT ARMORER STUDENT BODY  

COURSE / CLASS REQUIREMENTS:
This information sheet will provide instructions and information about:

SAFETY PROCEDURES WITH WEAPONS:

All weapons brought to class will be cleared in accordance with the -10 manual for that weapon system. Weapons will additionally have a rod placed down the entire length of the barrel by the Class Leader and Assistant Class Leader. This will be done outside the East side of the building at the loading dock the weapon being brought into the classroom. All weapons will be signed in on the weapons sign in sheet unless on a hand receipt DA Form 2062 is furnished prior to the student taking the weapon to his/her seat. All safety precautions listed in the technical manuals will be observed.

Read the FM on each weapon to know how the weapon operates. Do this on the evening preceding the day’s weapon assignment. Read the TM (Unit Level) on each weapon & learn the names of the weapons parts, SMR Code, how to use the Technical Manual to find information. Read the PMCS (Quarterly Maintenance) procedures on each weapon prior to class instruction. Complete the homework sheet for the day  and return it to the Class Leader NLT 0900 of the next day’s class. The Class leader will give them to the instructor after he/she has all of them. All paper work will be turned in through the class leader with exception of quizzes and performance exam paperwork. They will be presented to an instructor when asked.

METHODS OFINSTRUCTION:

Most of the time we use the Lock Step approach to learning. We show you how then you do it. Sometimes we have you read the instructions from the TM and then you perform the task.  In addition to class room instruction, you will have Home Work which entails reading assignments each night. You will be required to look up various items in the TM for information from various sections the parts section and annotate the homework sheets. We provide comprehensive testing with defective parts introduced into the weapons for you to find, along with a comprehensive quiz, and executing the proper paperwork provides you and us with feedback on how well you understand the material. NOTE: If you find that our instructional methods are not getting the presented material across to you for understanding, then you must ask questions for clarity until you fully understand the material presented.

MANDATORY  HOMEWORK  ASSIGNMENTS:

All assignments for homework will be presented in writing and are located in the boxes in the front of the class room for each day requirement. If you forget to get one in class they are located on the internet under homework. Print it out at home, your unit, or use the library computer (if you don’t have a computer available) complete it and bring it in.  The homework sheets have questions that must be answered by you and then turned in the next day by 0900 hours. They include, but are not limited to the following: 

  COURSE OBJECTIVES:

D
AY 1 Read this brief, for information about student class responsibilities and the Class Leaders responsibilities and Day 1 for Day 2 assignment sheet, and comply with its instructions.
DAY 2 thru DAY 9:  Read the FM and TM regarding the next day’s weapon. Be prepared to discuss the weapon system using the correct part nomenclature. Read the PMCS procedures for the Unit Organizational Armorer and be prepared to execute them in class. Execute the 15 question homework for each day for all remaining weapons and the night observation devices the night before the instruction on the equipment. Your unit is responsible to provide you with the time and materials to attend this course.

T
he student shall perform Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services on all Small Arms / Night Vision Devices (NVD) in accordance with (IAW) the T M for the weapon or NVD. He/She shall be able to identify broken, defective, or worn parts and correctly execute the proper TAMMS forms as outlined in DA PAM 750-8 to annotate the defects found, execute a DD form 314 to indicate scheduled maintenance has been performed and rescheduled, and indicate the proper manner for recording NMCS time for reportable items. He/She must correctly Annotate DA form 2404 to describe all faults found and execute DA Form 2408-14 or DA Form 2407 when required.

COURSE
STANDARDS

O
btain a 70% on all weapons/NVD and 80% on final to pass and receive an Army certificate of completion. Obtain an 80% on all weapons/NVD and 80% on final examination to certify and receive an additional Certificate of Certification. A below 70 in any task will be cause for Failing the Course and no certificates will be issued. The instructor will inform the Class Leader of a failing student.  No student will depart the classroom until he/she has been notified by the class leader that a failing grade has been attained and to return to his/her unit. Class leader will procure all course material prior to releasing a student. Each quiz or homework can be redone once to obtain a passing grade should a student fail one.

GRADING SYSTEM

T
he course is designed with 200 points per equipment with a hands on examination. Or 100 points without a hands on examination system, and 100 points on the final examination. It is a go or no go system. In accordance with G-3 Training, Students must score an average of at least 70%  average on all tasks and at least 80% on the final examination to pass the course. If a student scores below 70% on a task  that student will receive 0 points for that test. If a student obtains less than 80% on the final examination, no certificates will be awarded the student . . No student will leave class until he/she has returned all school equipment/material to the class leader. The Class Leader will inform the failed student to return to his/her unit after signing their master grade sheet in 3 copies. No student will leave class until told to do so by the Class Leader.

FINAL GRADE DETERMINATION

Q
uiz questions are weighted equally for 6.3 points. Quizzes are weighted 100% and combined with hands on examinations . Students will be informed of examination results.  Performance Hands-on Examinations with out a quiz will be rated as 100 percent. A student will receive the Lowest Failed Task Score as the course obtained score. 69 points or lower will be the standard for failing. A student must obtain 80% or higher on the final examination to Pass or certify the course. A student obtaining a score of less than 80  points on the Final Exam, will receive a score of 69 for the final examination and course grade. Please ask questions to clarify the above if you do not understand what is presented.

DAY BY DAY ACTIVITIES
DAY 1 Enrollment, Introduction, Publications, SMR Code, and Security.
DAY 2 TAMMS QUIZ ON CHAPTER’S 1&3 DA PAM 750-8 on DA FORM’S 2404, 2407, 2408-14 and DD Form 314. AR 700-138
Identification of Reportable items. Student should be familiar with Tables B1 and B2.
DAY 3
, 4, 5, and 9, the student must to furnish transportation and the required weapon for class instruction.
DAY 5, the M-500/590 Shotgun. Day 6 7 & 8 the school will provide the M-249 and the M-240 Machineguns, & the M-2 MG. The student body must furnish a military vehicle (TMP Acceptable) an NCO in the Grade of SGT or higher and 4 soldiers to accompany him/her to pick up the weapons from the IRT Arms room at bldg. 1013 @ 0830 and have them in the classroom by 0900. Class leader will take the required paperwork to sign for the weapons. Weapons need to be returned to the arms room not later than 1630 hours of the day they were drawn. Weapons will not be transported in a POV. If a vehicle cannot be made available, weapons will be transported from the Arms Room by foot to the class room. The NCO will secure the hand receipt upon return of the weapons and return it to the instructor immediately after weapons are turned in. Students will not leave the classroom until the hand receipt is secured in the hands of the instructor.

ONE ON ONE HELP:
We will give you help [One-On-One] during any lunch time that you ask us to be available. Additionally, our home telephone numbers are near the White Board (top right) in the front of the classroom and elsewhere in this brief. You may call us in the evening Monday through Friday prior to 2100 hours for “One on One” help with your homework or any unclear Armorer related problems you may have.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS:
We “JR” and I “Bill”, fully care about you understanding the Unit Armorer Course Material.  ASK QUESTIONS!!!! Again, if we give you an answer to a question and it does not suit your needs, keep asking the question until you get a satisfactory answer. It is up to you to ensure that you understand the course material presented.


CLASS BREAK TIMES, START/END TIMES & LUNCH TIMES:
We will take two  breaks each day AM break at 1030 and PKM Break at 1430 for 15 minutes each.. Class Leader is responsible to keep the noise down while on break. All students will exit the classroom while on break. There is one exception to this policy. The class leader and his/her assistant may stay to discuss problems with the instructors. Class start time is 0900 hours and Class end time is 1700 hours. Lunch will be from 1200 Hours to 1300 hours.

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION OF MATERIAL BY INSTRUCTOR:
It is your duty and responsibility to ask questions in class forclarification of subject material you do not understand. You must keep asking questions until you understand all material presented!  If you do not ask questions we, as instructors, must assume you understand the presented material! JR and I Bill, have over 45 years of combined Active Army service dealing with weapons, logistics, maintenance and medical procedures to include senior leadership and realize your responsibilities. We, as instructors, CARE for your successful completion of this course very much, so please ask questions! 

COURSE PURPOSE:
To educate the Unit Armorer in proper “By the Book” Organizational Maintenance and Security Procedures. Teach the student to identify weapons malfunctions and accomplish the proper repair procedures and to recognize higher maintenance levels, execute proper forms and get the weapon turned into the direct support maintenance facility.

CLASS PARTICIPATION:
Asking questions and participation in disassembly and assembling of weapons is a must to successfully complete the course. Students that lack class participation will be singled out and may not pass the course.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
Weapons must be cleared outside the classroom prior to taking the weapon to your seat. Wearing of Safety Goggles must be done when disassembling or assembling spring loaded parts. All safety precautions listed in the technical manuals will be observed.

STANDARDS OF CONDUCT:
Students will conduct themselves as military professionals at all times during class. Horseplay, Ridiculing Other Students, Using Profanity, Derogatory Religious Names, Arguing With An Instructor, Or Not Following The Instructors Instructions Will Not Be Tolerated And May Be Cause For Dismissal From The Course. Students Shall Not Write Or Place Their Hands On Classroom Walls. Giving Or Receiving Help Will Be Grounds For Dismissal From The Course. If you need help get an Instructor!  Notes from previous classes unless your own are forbidden. If you need help, ask the instructor, not a classmate.

EMERGENCY ABSENCE / SICK
The US Army Logistics School G-3 Standards for total time missed is 2 hours per class.  Students having an emergency/Sick call over 2 hrs, must have a letter of release from the Unit Commander. Class Leader will secure all issued materials of the soldier leaving for the emergency and or sick call.


FIRE EVACUATION:
Upon hearing the words FIRE>>>FIRE>>>FIRE, Students will immediately exit the building without carrying any material through the North door of the classroom if not blocked by fire, otherwise exit the Front/West door or the Rear/West door and proceed out the east rear door or the south NBC classroom doors to the building parking lot north of the school building. Class Leader will call roll report any missing to an instructor. Instructor’s secure weapons sign in roster, close doors/ windows exit the building after all students are be outside. Instructor will call ALL CLEAR prior to anyone reentering the building.  

NOTE BOOK ORGANIZER:
The notebook organizer is provided for you to organize you class notes, hand-outs and homework. Place the top cover of the organizer booklet in the outside front flap of a 3-ringed binder and the remaining sheets into individual document protectors. As you receive hand-outs and complete your homework assignments they are to be placed in multiple document protectors and inserted behind the appropriate divider page so all pages can be read without removing them from the protectors. 

LATRINES:
Students will use the outside latrines. See an instructor for key. Class leader is responsible for locking latrines upon the close of the class each day.

TELEPHONES:
Cell phones will be placed on vibrate and kept out of sight unless you have a spouse or immediate family member in the hospital. Outside the door in the South front of the classroom is a student phone next to the water fountain. Dial 99 to get an outside line. A THREE minute time limit is set and it is for official use only.

BREAK AREA:
Student break area is located through the front classroom West door or outside the building.

SODA AND SNACK MACHINES:
These machines are located in the North side of the building next to the front Project Managers and Clerks office. Contents are permissible in the classroom. All empty soda cans will be placed in the recycle bin next to the machines.

ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO USE:

A
lcohol consumption will not be authorized during class times or during your lunch period while attending classes. All tobacco products must be used outside the building and 50 feet from any building entrance. Dipping or chewing tobacco products are not authorized inside the building. Tobacco products of any kind will not be used in the classroom. Smoking, dipping and chewing will be permitted 50 feet from any military building. Police your butts, do not bring spit cans into the classroom and do not spit tobacco products into the latrine commodes, trash cans or the drinking fountain.

SNOW DAYS WITH DELAY START TIME:
If weather personnel say it will be snowing in the morning, listen to the radio/TV in the AM for a base delay or closure time. Delay times start at 0700 for non-essential personnel.

UNIFORM WEAR AND MILITARY APPEARANCE:
In accordance with G-3 Directive, The Military Duty Uniform shall be worn during class times. Neither civilian attire nor the PT uniform will be worn in class. Military appearance will be in accordance with established current regulations. Written Authorization from your Commander must accompany any student that cannot comply with above directive. 

DUTIES IN STUDENT PARENT UNIT:
Students must not have duties or work in the unit while attending school. Students will be required to complete homework assignments when due. Failure to do these requirements will be just cause for an unsuccessful course completion. Students will be required to sign an affirmation statement stating they have completed the required assignment. Students that have a problem getting enough time to complete the assignments shall contact the Class Leader for assistance.

HONOR SYSTEM:
The honor system is followed through out this course. Deviation from this system will be cause for dismissal from the course.

CLASS START TIME:
Class will start on time 0900 HOURS provided the proper amount of weapons or equipment is furnished to the school. We can't teach if the weapons or equipment are not available. It is your unit's responsibility to provide you with the proper weapon on the required day. If your unit doesn't have the equipment required, maybe your sister unit can assist a loan for class.

NOTES YOU MAKE:
Notes you generate, and the materials that are issued to you and your computer may be used in all examinations unless a different directive was given on the conditions statement of our instruction sheet.

YOUR STUDENT #:
Your Student Number will be placed (top right) on all paperwork/forms turned in for grading or on your notes.

WEAPONS/EQUIPMENT COORDINATION:
The Class Leader will coordinate the weapons requirements. Some units are without weapons. Other units may have an abundance. A combined effort of units with weapons and a military vehicle to transport them to school for student use must be established.
The Class Leader will coordinate vehicle requirements for Week 2 Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at IRT arms room Bldg. 1049) to transport weapons from USAG Arms room to the classroom by 0900.  The weapons guards for that day will provide the loading and unloading of weapons at the Arms room. The vehicle driver, who is in addition to the 4 guards and the detail NCO, will stay with the vehicle and watch weapons during loading and unloading. Class Leader will sign for the weapons. He will account for weapons received and turned in Upon returning the weapons to the arms room, the Class Leader will secure and return hand receipt. Then students can leave.

PARTICIPATION IN CLASS:
Students are encouraged to ask all questions to clarify any misunderstanding of the material presented and continue to ask questions until satisfied with an answer.

CLASS LEADERS RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Class Leader will:
Ensure all students are seated by 0900 hours and tardy/missing students are annotated on the class roster. Keep a running total of all students time missed and why and report students that exceed 2 hours missed time to the Master Instructor.

Ensure you and the assistant class leader and all students read this briefing document and understand it. Have all students sign the affirmation page and collect them. Make sure all have put their student number on the signed sheet. When all are accounted for, turn them into an instructor.

The first Monday of the course, ensure that all students are present at building 2757 at 1300 hours for the Physical Security portion of the course. This building is the next to the last building going south on Barkley. Secure a roster of all attendants at the class and furnish the Armorer instructor the same on Tuesday morning.

Maintain order and discipline during instruction times ensuring students are not talking while the instructor is teaching. Repeated offenses of this nature can be cause for dismissal from the course. Perform a written counseling statement for 2nd offenses and present it to the Master Instructor.

Maintain the student sign out sheet for students going off campus (with exception of lunch time).

You will ensure that students know that they are prohibited from helping other students unless directed by an Armorer Instructor.

Compile and post on the bulletin board the first Tuesday, a lunch time guard roster for weapons guards (4 ea per day) starting Wednesday of the first week and continuing while weapons or military sensitive equipment are in the classroom. Compile and post on the bulletin board the first Tuesday a duty roster by student number for cleanup, trash detail etc; See an instructor for a blank copy.

Ensure all trash is taken out of the building at the end of the day. Ensure that students place all white/colored trash paper in the recycling bin on the south side of the copying machine and all other trash are placed in the north side receptacle and soda cans are placed in the receptacle near the soda machines.

Ensure that all fans are turned off and all chairs are on top of the tables at the end of class each day. Ensure that the window blinds on the North windows are closed with the blades pointing up. Ensure that students do not use the copying machine without Instructor permission. 

Ensure that students place their chairs fully under their respective tables when they are not using them, and that students do not lean back on them while using them.

Ensure that all students wear their safety goggles/glasses during disassembly/assembly of all weapons, and that students remain in their seats unless called upon by the instructor and that students do not teach other students that only the instructor teaches unless authorized by the instructor.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:


The student will:
Ensure that you are seated on time 0900 hours, and have all necessary data and equipment for class.

Ensure that you read and understand this briefing, Sign the affirmation page and present it to the class leader. Place your student number at the top of the page.

The first Monday of the course, ensure that you are present at building 2757 at 1300 hours for the Physical Security portion of the course and  sign the attendance roster.

Maintain order and discipline during instruction times ensuring you do not talk while the instructor is teaching.

Remember to sign out on the sign sheet if going off campus (with exception of lunch time).

Ensure that you do not receive or give help or give help to another student unless instructed to do so by an instructor.

Check the duty roster daily on the bulletin board for responsibilities, and complete them in a professional and timely manner.

Place only trash in the trash containers and soda cans in the recycled container next to the soda machines and white/colored paper in the recycle container.

Ensure you participate in all exercises and ask questions to clarify any misunderstanding of the material presented.
